Poster Award for scientists

Jury in South Korea awards poster developed at the HSZG.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) organizes the annual ASME Turbo EXPO, the world's largest and most important conference focusing on turbomachinery with around 3000 participants. This year, the conference took place from June 13-17, 2016 in Seoul, South Korea. The spline-based table look-up method (SBTL) developed by Matthias Kunick at the Department of Technical Thermodynamics at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Kretzschmar was presented in a poster contribution. The calculation method developed in cooperation with the Technical University of Dresden and the German Aerospace Center Cologne (DLR) is suitable for the precise and at the same time extremely fast calculation of thermophysical state variables of the working fluids in numerical process simulations with spline interpolation, such as in numerical flow simulations with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This method is the subject of a new guideline from the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS), which was adopted as an internationally binding standard in 2015. The poster presentation introduced the audience to the basics of the SBTL method and its practical application. A jury consisting of 17 experts selected the poster presented from a total of 44 entries and awarded it the "ASME Turbo EXPO Student Poster Award (1st Place)".
