The IPM also actively participated in the Annual Conference on Nuclear Technology in 2017.
The 48thAnnual Meeting on Nuclear Technology (AMNT)took place in Berlin from 16 to 17 May 2017. During the opening ceremony of this annual event, Dr. Ralf Güldner, President of the German Atomic Forum (DAtF), stated, among other things, that there is a risk of a loss of expertise in the field of nuclear technology at a national level. Internationally, however, there is an unbroken high demand for German safety expertise. It is therefore important to maintain and utilize existing expertise over a long period of time. A new competence center for nuclear safety could offer a solution here.
After the plenary session, numerous specialist presentations were held on topics relating to the research, development and application of nuclear energy. The Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation and Measurement Technology (IPM) of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) also made a contribution: In the presentations by Dr. André Seeliger (HSZG/IPM) and Dr. Ulrich Harm (TUD), the current status of the project "Local effects in the PWR core as a result of zinc borate deposits after LOCA" was presented and discussed in front of an expert audience. This nuclear safety research project is now one of many that have been and are being worked on in proven cooperation between the IPM, TU Dresden (TUD) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR).
The joint stand of the Competence Network Nuclear Technology with the participation of the Competence Center Nuclear Technology East (KompOst), which was presented at the AMNT for the first time, was also very well received. It made it clear that the path of intergenerational knowledge transfer and innovation promotion in the field of nuclear technology has long been continued here, even though nuclear energy itself will only be involved in national electricity generation until 2022. As an interdisciplinary institute, the IPM has long recognized the challenges of the associated energy transition and has opened up corresponding new areas of activity. At the same time, its long-standing efforts to preserve, apply and impart nuclear expertise will continue unabated.
