On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the self-help group “Caring Relatives” of the Herrnhut Diakonie visited the Active Assisted Living Laboratory (AAL Laboratory) in Görlitz. The aim of the visit was to learn about technical support options that can relieve the burden on family caregivers in their everyday lives and enable those in need of care to live as independently as possible.
The AAL laboratory in Görlitz has a realistic model apartment equipped with modern assistance technology. It serves as a practical testing and demonstration environment for intelligent systems in the areas of safety, comfort, and everyday support. Among other things, sensor technologies for fall detection, smart emergency call solutions, and digital assistance systems for home care were presented.
During a guided tour, participants were given a clear insight into how the technologies work and were able to try them out for themselves. There was particular interest in solutions that relieve the burden on family caregivers in everyday life, such as automated reminder functions, voice-controlled applications, and location and safety systems for people with increased support needs.
It is particularly important for family caregivers to know what technical options are available to increase safety and at the same time create freedom. Exchanging ideas with self-help groups such as the Herrnhuter Diakonie is an important step toward better understanding practical needs and developing targeted technical solutions. The visit provided an opportunity for questions, discussions, and the exchange of experiences, and highlighted how modern assistance systems can contribute to the long-term support of care in the home environment. The Active Assisted Living Laboratory thus makes an important contribution to the transfer of knowledge between technology development, care practice, and family caregivers.
